DeMotte Library Celebrates 50 Years

On Monday, Aug. 15, the DeMotte Library will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The first library, opened on Monday, Aug. 15, 1966, occupied a small room in a building just north of the railroad tracks.

Keith Robinson, who was the publisher of the Kankakee Valley Post News and owner of the building agreed to share his space with the library.

I love words, but have recently become confused by the use of the word “hack.” Looking it up in Webster’s Dictionary, the definition was just as I expected; ‘short, dry cough;’ ‘to manage successfully,’ ‘computer hacking’ ‘to cut, or chop roughly or with heavy blows.’

JCPL Launching 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program

Beginning May 2, all three branches of the Jasper County Public Library are launching “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten,” a program that encourages children ages birth through preschool to discover the love of reading.
